![]() Spotlight: Earthquake Relief Programs 1999 In late 1999 two major earthquakes struck Turkey, the first near Istanbul and the second in the mountainous region halfway between Istanbul and Ankara. Seeing a true felt need, Kucak immediately moved to help with the relief effort. During our deployment to the Düzce region after the first quake, we mostly supervised and ran programs to help children cope with the trauma of having lost loved ones. The second earthquake gave us a different field of service. There were many small villages that were overlooked by other government and NGO relief organizations and we moved in to work there. The villages of Gölyaka and Yığılca became our primary focus. The authorities of both villages asked us to help build schools for their children and so we were able to build an eight-classroom building in Gölyaka using outside funds and a twenty-classroom building in the larger Yığılca by partnering with fellowships from Ankara. In both instances we found plenty of opportunities to share God’s love with the people in these villages. In 2004 Kucak released the Doğuşa Hazırlık Güncem, a book that explains what Christmas is all about. Here’s one of the lovely pictures drawn especially for this book.
